AWS bets on OTT players with AI & Data Analytics
Amazon Web Services (AWS) which is the cloud computing arm of Amazon, plans to get into Over-the-top (OTT) content providers market of India with their data analytics & artificial intelligence platform.
Bikram Bedi, head of India region, AWS said that globally, and in India, media & entertainment has been a huge focus of the company. They work with OTT platforms or linear TV platforms like Voot, Hotstar, Netflix, Sony, Amazon Prime, Tata Sky etc.
The company's service called Midas from Elemental enables customers to monetize video offerings. AWS will help OTT, entertainment and media players in the entire media life-chain from the stage of downloading content to delivering it to customers. Bedi added, "So around analytics on video, we've launched a platform called Rekognition, which allows you to take video streams, store them in S3, and then analyse. You could analyse activity, facial analytics and events."
The company also works with independent software vendors like Tessact whose data analytics & AI platform helps customers in the entertainment and media space such as scene detection, facial recognition and subtitle extraction.
AWS also plans to introduce the concept of video analytics to the surveillance market of India. Bedi says, "We've launched DeepLens, which could for example be used at an ATM, to spot if some uncanny activity is taking place. It would detect detect motion and raise an alarm."
Bedi said that besides their foray into analytics for OTT players, they also partner regularly with VC firms because they want to help startups in India. They feel its important to work with VC's as they are key stakeholders. Their interaction with VC's is about how they can help them with mentorship.
Bedi also responded to the claims of cybersecurity issues with Amazon S3 buckets as reported by various cyber security firms and said, "We have a number of services (like AWS Config rules that can automatically identify buckets set to be publicly available, and AWS CloudTrail to audit access and other operations on AWS resources like Amazon S3 buckets) that help customers audit and consider their configuration changes, and we will continue to add capabilities that give customers additional ways to triple check their customizations."
