Facing an interview is really scary to many of the candidates. It becomes more intimidating than showcasing your talent for many. In fact, I had also gone through the same phase when giving an interview for my dream job. The reason why I am writing this article is to give you a power dose of how can you come up with flying colors in an interview.
I have written this article for candidates who are preparing for the position of Data Scientist in their dream company. But, this article can be taken as a model to prepare for an interview because the strategy involved is the same.
Let's begin:

  • Give yourself the time to understand your objectives
Find time to relax and do some introspection. Ask yourself the reasons for applying for Data Scientist role. Ask Why do you want to pursue your career in Data Science? Why do you want to become a Data Scientist? What made you chose this role when there are lots of opportunities around? Ask and come up with the best answer. An answer that justifies you and an answer that will benefit the organization in which you will work. Think with an intention to give your service in the best possible way. Do not try to copy the answer from the internet. Try to find your own unique answer.

  • Develop your skills and have confidence in them
You are applying for a role that requires much of your attention and time. The role demands the finest technical and soft skills from you. Master skills that are important for a Data Scientist. There are no shortcuts. You must have mastery in your field. Kindly go through the below skills and start developing them. They will help you a lot in your career.

  1. Develop a strong hand in programming languages like Python and R.
  2. Mater your knowledge in Mathematics and Statistics
  3. Develop a good understanding of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
  4. Start analyzing Data and try to enjoy it.
  5. Give emphasis on your communication skills. Those will be needed at the times of making your team and stakeholders understand your analysis.
  • Post your Resume and Develop your network
When you are all done with your objectives and key skills development, start making your Resume and make in a way that it best showcases your professional skills and at the same time your soft skills. Develop your Resume.
Do not stop after making your Resume. You need to develop your network in LinkedIn as well. Its a fact that candidates having a well-developed profile on LinkedIn appeals to the recruiters more. While building strong networks in LinkedIn takes time, you should have started it before. But it's not too late to start now if you haven't.

  • Go through the Job Description
I did not put this point in the starting as I wanted to make you realize how important it is to be prepared at your own first and then looking at the company's requirements. Most of the candidates go through the job description without even analyzing themselves and their objectives and passion. Don't do it. This is not an intelligent way to go ahead. For a person, you should be aware of your objectives, your skills, and your passion. It will give you a clear mindset.

  • Do not Fear
When you have prepared everything and are ready for the interview do not get fearful about the selection criteria. There is nothing to get feared of. You are going to join a particular organization for a particular role because your passion lies there. There are 100% chances for a candidate having the passion and the relevant skills to get selected. Companies also want a good employee for the growth of their organization. They work very hard to approach the right candidates. Even if you face a phase when the company rejects you for some purpose take that as a chance to learn something new. Maybe you haven't prepared well. Go for the next time and crack it!

I hope the above points prove helpful to you in your interview process. All the Best!
