United States Air Force Starts Artificial Intelligence Project To Analyze Flow Of Information

In June 2017, artificial intelligence (AI) startup, SparkCognition raised $32.5 million Series B funding for its AI powered cyber-physical software (CPS). The round led by Verizon Ventures with participation by Boeing's HorizonX unit. In July 2017, the company announced an eight to 10-month project with the United States Air Force (USAF) to bring AI by the DiuX, which accelerates commercial innovation for national defense.

CPS is the common ground between people and information, cyber technologies, the relationship between AI and hardware, humans and software. SparkCognition's AI software is used to make sense of all the real-time sensor data from machines that flow across the enterprise and assess problems before they happen.

The project, called Project Quantum, is intended to leverage machine learning to analyze the flow of information across the USAF and then apply the knowledge to its Planning, Programming, Budgeting, and Execution (PPBE) process. The PPBE process is how the Department of Defense (DoD) allocates resources.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Roger Cabiness, Spokesperson, OSD Public Affairs, the USAF, decided to construct this project in a way so that all services can benefit from it.

"By thinking jointly, the DoD can prepare for future challenges more efficiently. Over the last two years, the USAF developed a methodology for Project Quantum that is service-agnostic and therefore focuses on the types of data we obtain," said Cabiness. "We want to leverage USAF, DoD, and external datasets to augment senior AF leader decision processes quantitatively."

"Although AI may provide a viable methodology to gain insights, it is by no means the only approach. Our early objectives are to understand how to leverage both internal and external data to support the decision process with awareness about its Forces and external factors," said Cabiness. "However, since a substantial amount of data and many complex relationships and interdependencies exist, the military requires techniques to extract the pertinent information from the noise, this will allow us to focus on the overall strategy we depend on."
